Make Toad open faster.

Make Toad open faster.

We pass from the version 9.1.0.62 to the 10.1.1.8.

The time to open Toad had very increase.

We are on XP Service Pack 3.

There is a known issue with many customers who are running McAfee. If you are running McAfee try to add Toad to a list of applications to not scan. If you or your administrator aren't permitted to do that, and by running Task Manager you can determine it is McAfee causing the problem, we can't fix this for you. We are actively working with McAfee to try to get them to resolve this so it doesn't occur in future releases.

If that's not it, here's something else you can check: From Toad's main menu, go to Help, then Toad Advisor. It may have some performance suggestions.

  3. I too have experienced that slow down. I don't have definitive proof, but it appears that TOAD may be 'phoning home' at launch. I say this because we were having some network problems a couple of weeks ago and TOAD was very slow to launch. After the network problems were resolved, the TOAD launch returned to normal.

If TOAD is indeed 'phoning home', please do it asynchronously or make an option to turn it off or regulate it so that it doesn't slow the launch. I was in an emergency situation and had to resort to SQL/Plus: I felt totally hamstrung.

Look under Options -> startup. There are some options you can uncheck to control checking for updates and downloading tips at startup.

  5. Thank you John, I should have looked...

Unfortunately, the only option is 'Check for Toad Updates'. How about an option to check once a day, once a week, once a month?

Brian, please enter that as a separate idea so it can get voted on independently. Thanks

  7. I see very slow startup (many minutes) when my default printer (HP Photosmart C4500 series) is offline.

Switching the default printer to a virtual printer (always online), restore the normal startup speed (few seconds).

To discover the cause i analyzed the call stack of the frozen toad.exe process and found many call to the hp driver.

What printer are you using? I tried this locally, but am really unable to replicate the scenario 100%. Here's what I've tried.

    1. Add a local printer which does not exist (simulate printer is offline)

    2. Add a network printer located on a server that does not exist (simulate server is offline or inaccessible)

    3. Add a network printer located on a server that does exist, but that does not have a printer (simulate server is accessible, but printer is offline)

In all 3 cases above I've set the printer as default and started Toad and there was no noticeable delay. Perhaps it's printer/driver specific. If you let me know which printer you have setup I'll try again. Also what scenario above would best describe your setup?
